Zef Ndrecaj

University of Prishtina, Faculty of Philology

A historical linguist working chiefly on the phonology of Northern Gheg and on the written attestations of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries.

Zef Ndrecaj spent thirty years on the development of the Northern Gheg vowel system, working from Franciscan archive manuscripts rather than from field material. His argument that the early split of /ɑ/ is not an internal development but a contact phenomenon remains contested.

He has taught in Prishtina since 2011 and directed the digitisation of the Shkodër manuscript holdings. The second edition of his Historical Phonology was written jointly with Lorenc Prendushi and added a chapter on prosody that the first lacked entirely.
